I'm in the process of renovating a 1903 mid-terrace 2 bed house.

My girlfriend likes the look of the existing timber floor, as revealed to let the electrician work. I'm taking the opportunity to replace water and gas services whilst we have access.

What I would like to ask is: How best to insulate and stop draughts?

The suspended timber floor has crawling space, is well ventilated, skirting is already removed and boards are (mostly) in good condition. I'm happy to take up the whole floor if required.

I believe these are my insulation options;

1. rockwool and netting between joists and up to exterior wall
2. polystyrene slabs and batterns
3. Ultra thin silver sided bubble wrap type products, laid over joist with a 50mm airgap under boards and fitted behind skirting

To stop the airflow between boards, these are my options

1. plug with filler, saw dust etc.
2. Cut tongues and grooves onto existing boards
3. board joists with 18mm T&G p5 Chipboard and floor boards on top

Any advice greatly appreciated. I like to get it right 1st time, even if it takes more work!

If you use a product called Celotex, say 50mm you can get thicker or thinner, but if you cut it tight between the joist it will solve the draught problem at the same time.

Renewing the gas is a different kettle of fish to the water pipe. Shocked
