Our small CH header tank continually overflows. The odd thing is it usually only does this after the CH system has been turned off (although originally it was doing it when the CH system was turned on, & there was lots of banging, banging stopped and the current condition established). The small tank is the CH header tank. It has a ball cock, an overflow pipe coming from above and the system fill up hole in the bottom. The system is gas fired. What happens is that warn/hot water comes back up the bottom hole (not through the overflow) and just very slowly fills the tank until it overflows. I have the ball cock fastened so the tank never fills itself from the cold water supply. When the system is turned on it then pulls water in from the tank so I have to fill it with the water I have taken out when it was filling up. This can be many litres.

I have 5 days ago put in 1 litre of CalChem to flush it out. All the rads work well, no cold spots. Hot water seems fine. There is no specific overall room thermostat, each rad has its own. There are two honetwell valves in airing cupboard that presumably control CH to rads & to hot water system.

This morning we turned the CH system off at 00.30 (12.30am). The small header tank less than half full. Got up at 6.00am. Small tank filled up, water is warm & overflowing outside. Pipe leading from small header tank was still full of warm water.

Boiler is 22 years old and is a Potterton Netaheat.

Has anybody got any suggestions please. Also, when the system gets rid of all this water, what is replacing it.

If the water is rpelnishing itself with the ball valve off there could be a problem with the coil inside your Hot Water Cylinder.

Is the big storage tank ball cock running at all? It might only be a small drip so might not be easy to notice.

Thanks. I think this could well be the problem as when I turn off the valve from cold water tank to the hot water cylinder the persistant dripping soon stops. Waiting for plumber to come now & deal with it.
