Please can anybody help.
We have an old Ideal Gas boiler in an old house we moved into a couple of years ago. The previous owner had the whole central heating system covered on a British Gas Homecare Plan.
In our first year here, everything was working fine. In the second year, the central heating programmer starting working erratically. As it was probably as old as the boiler (1970's possibly), we called out British Gas who fitted their own programmer (but not backplate) as it fitted straight onto the existing one.
This worked for a few days then started to turn off and on whenever it felt like it. The pilot light always remained on, the fuse never blew, but the programmer was dead. No lights whatever you did.
Each time I called out British Gas (3 more times) by the time they arrived the programmer had decided to turn back on again, so there was nothing they could do. So the last time it happened, I asked the engineer to fit the new British gas backplate for the programmer. He suggested that it was rare for that part to go wrong but did it anyway.
That seemed to cure the problem as we went about 6 weeks with no problems at all.
Suddenly, at the end of last week, on a really cold and miserable day, the programmer switched off again. A few hours later back on it came.
Now it is off again for the last 2 days and we are freezing.
British Gas says we are only covered for the central heating system and controls, rads etc and not for the power coming into the boiler. They say it is an electrical fault which could be anywhere and they cannot touch it.
Please is there anyone out there who could give me an idea as to where to start looking.
The programmer runs directly to a fused socket, which although very old, I have opened up and checked all the wires running into it.
From there the wire runs straight into the boiler which seems ok.
Somewhere the power seems to be starting and stopping at all different times and comes on and off at will.
The cupboard under the stairs houses the fuse boxes which I must admit need upgrading. They still use fusewire. I will get someone in to wire me in a new consumer box.
PLEASE HELP SOLVE THIS PROBLEM !!
Regards
