I just installed a dimmer switch in the dining room. after turtning the power back on, the outlets in the living room no longer work. the dimmer switch, however, works great. What happened & how do i fix it?

Sounds like you disconnected the outlets when you installed the dimmer. Make sure all the black hot wires are pigtailed under a wirenut with one of them feeding the switch, the switch leg will go to the light only, the nuetrals should be connected together and the grounds should be connected together.
