It now has to be done by a PART P registered contractor to remain legal.

That is a good question however the way the government has ammended Building Regulations outside electrical work is now considered 'notifiable'.

Basically that means that building control in your area has to be informed of the work and the only way an electrician can notify this work simply is if they are registered with a competent persons scheme. Otherwise it is necessary to contact building control in the normal way and they will arrange for the necessary tests to be carried out (at a price!!).

I know what you mean however. With my own trade, heating and plumbing, there a similar areas. These days it doesn't matter what you know, or how good you are at a job, you have to go the extra stage and join one of the various schemes. (Oh forgot - join means paying big money along the way - what with the various assessments etc!)

I make you right Alan, just the govement finding another way to get more money out of our pockets. But I do feel Part P is the wrong way to do it as the ball lays firmly in the house holders court as he is the one that has to comply with the building regs. They should have something like Corgi that is totally seperate from the council and nows what it is talking about. I probably get 3+_ calls a week from my local DS asking me silly bloody questions about the regs Evil or Very Mad
