The low volatge transformer that I've bought says that I'm got to use 1.5mm cable to connest up the LV lspotlights. Surely a simple lighting circuit (4 lamps) would only need 1mm cable

Voltage is not the determining factor when selecting wire size, the current is. If that is what the manufacturers recommends, I would pay attention.
