Replacing 5 position switch with "dimmer"

I am doing some remodeling and need to replace an existing 5 position rotary switch to a ceiling fan - I see no reason why I can't replace it with a common rheostat (dimmer switch).

Can anyone tell me if this is, in fact, okay to do?
