Hi
I have a steel I beam @ 203 X 102 X 23 and 5 metres long.

I am going to Bolt wood onto the Beam to hold new floor joists in an attik conversion.

How many holes can I drill if the hole is 14mm before the beam becomes unsafe?

Also I asked the Scruff yesterday about nailing the wood to the beam. he kindly answered my question but the people in the hire shop think it will not be sufficient for building regs.

Does anybody know what method building regs would accept?

Think about it for a minute and then draw it out, The joists will actually hold the wood in place once its fixed, the noggins requires no real fixing other than holding the wood in place while you position the joist, the nails are fine.

But please ask your building control man.

If you go down the drilling and bolting road, then you can drill as many holes as you like, without weakening the steel.

No probs, I've been in the trade for 47 years so know a little bit.

Assuming you have drawing for the job which are approved, must of the details should be on them.

get to know your building inspector, he will be very helpfull if you ask him first, sort off makes him feel important Laughing
