Can anyone tell me why the word 'anaesthetic' is the answer to a cryptic clue involving the word 'number'? eg. 'An artistic sort of number' has the answer 'anaesthetic'. I understand 'an artistic sort' being 'an aesthetic' but where does the number come in?

Could be a reference to the 19th cent art movement Rolling Eyes
