Hi.
I want to extend a section the roof of my house at the eaves in a cantilever fashion over a balcony, I do not particularly want a visible strut supporting this at the extremes is this possible?
The roof is a truss construction at 22 degrees pitch covered in Redland Stonewold concrete tiles. I want to extend it out approx 1m X 4m length. There is a vertical wall on one side which is the garage and the roof already extends down over this. So one corner of this overhang can be adequately supported.
The roof presently needs new felt and battens and now would be the time to do this addition. I am suspecting it is not as easy as strapping short rafters to the side of the existing roof trusses?
There is sufficient height above the french doors to have horizontal braces back to the wall, but do not want to do this either! unless absolutely no alternative.

I actually did this on an extention. I left the joists hang over the walls by the required distance and run the facia around the edge, underneath I fitted thin ply, and painted it
In your case you should seek an structural engineer to approve your plan, before submitting the plans for approval.
Would have thought at least 4-1 ratio for the overhang |

The Trusses are over 20m so well over the 4:1. My main concern was the weight of the tiles at 50kg per square metre and the fact that the extension rafters could not be more than 100mm high (height of existing truss rafters).
Sure would be easiier to put a support post in and I havent even thought about the cantilever balcony yet!!

Are you re-pitching the roof to include the overhang.
Are you using ready made trusses. |

Not altering the pitch of the house roof, just want to extend the eaves overhang from 250mm to 1000mmm (3 or 4 rows of tiles) about 4m length. over a bedroom window which will be replaced with french doors.
The roof line already extends down following the same pitch over a garage adjacent to where this window is.
Imagine a rectangular house with two gable ends and a simple pitched roof. Now, put a garage in front half the width of the house and extend part of the roof down over the garage this is what I have (sort of 'L' shape footprint). The new bit of roof will be from the garage to the end of the house.
The balcony i think can be easily supported by a steel through the wall, fortunately the floor joists are at rt angles to the window wall.
