Hi - not sure if this is the right group but i'll keep it short.

Bought my ex Council flat March 2003 (leasehold - although I wasnt the Council Tenant - it was bought off the Council in the 80s I think). In March 2005 the Council said they were going to repair the roofs and change the water tanks.

Received invoice today for £6412.14 to be paid within 28 days (other payment options are available but mainly loans or asking for more on my mortgage) .

Question - Is there like a time limit before the Managing Agents (the Council) can charge these type of costs? Nothing about this was mentioned at the time of me buying the flat.

Asking because I owe loads already (self-inflicted so no sympathy required!) but this is a huge bill.

Earlier in the year I had tried to get more on my mortgate but I am already maxed out because I got my mortgage on my previous salary (change of jobs).

Thanks!

And the bad news is Yes, every leaseholder is responsible for an equal portion of the maintainence.

Check your neighbours, and if some of the flats are rented by the council still check they are paying their share as well.

All this will be in your contract.

How it works is say the cost will be £100000.00 devided by 20 units = £5000.00 each.

As a point of interest, this type of devolopement normally has a maintainence contract where everyone pays say £50 month and you should check this out.

As I nsaid check the maintainence contract to see where you stand and asked the other tenants.

Your bill should show the total cost and how its been devided, if not ask.
