Last year I made my own wormery to fit a little balcony alcove. My wormery has three boxes for various stages of compost, plus a bottom box to collect the 'worm tea' which has been prolifically produced. I have three questions:
I am now ready to harvest my first (lower most) box and find that it's very soggy, resembling in both texture and slightly in smell too, of loose feces. I expected it to be like rich soil. I can't find out what's impeding the drainage into the bottom box. Should it be that texture? Has something gone not to plan? Secondly, whatever is on the top layer is always mouldy, and the man who sold me the worms implied they wouldn't like that. But, how can it be avoided? Thirdly, my wormery seems to be a very fine breeding ground for whitefly. As I'd like to discourage whitefly, but don't want to poison them and possibly my worms as well, any suggestions on how could I deal with that?
Any guidance or advice gratefully received. |

Dear thescruff,
Thanks for the web link. Believe me, I did loads of research on the web before I built my own wormery. But all of those sites are busy extolling the virtues of worms: not discussing what the results might be or should be or what you should do if the unexpected happens. They are preaching to the converted in my case: I am committed to doing it, but don't know if I've got a problem or not now that I'm a year in. I've sent the question to West Country Worms. I'll let you know how I get on. It would be so much easier if I had a garden!
Many thanks! |
