Can I use a ceiling light fixture as a wall sconce? Can ceiling fixtures also be mounted on a vertical surface?

I don't have a pic to post, but if I go into a lighting store and I see a ceiling fixture that I like, can I take it home and mount the light on a wall and not on the ceiling? Is there something in the design of ceiling fixtures that means that they can only be mounted from a ceiling or could they also be attached to a wall so that the fixture is in essence on its side? Obviously I'm not talking about a chandelier or something that hangs down but a fixture that is self-contained. Thanks.
