I have a 12 volt, 5 amp portable air compressor. What would happen if I ran 120 volt home current through a 12-volt, 3 amp transformer, then out to the compressor? In other words, would the transformer be over-taxed, or would the air compressor be under-powered (and will either be destroyed)?

Any insight would be of great help!

Thanks!

E.

The transformer will not cope and if it has no protection, it will melt down!!!

I think I may have used the word "transformer" erroneously. The 120v AC home current is stepped down to 12v / 3amp DC, if that makes any difference. I guess that makes it more of a power supply than a transformer....

It would still need to handle a current of 5amp.
It may work in short bursts, but not for long.
