Hello,

I had a ceiling fan installed in a house that was not wired for anything before. The guy that did it ran the power from the switch that runs the plug for the lights. I did not want a light kit for the fan and want to continue using the existing light. The guy that did the work said that you could not run both the plug and the ceiling fan off the same line so he disconnected the plug and wired the switch for the fan only.

I want to install a dual switch with one switch for the fan and one switch for the plug. Can't I just split the power that is now running the ceiling fan to power both switches? I was told that this can not be done but it doesn't make a lot on sence to me because if I had a light kit installed in the fan that circuit would be running both the light and the fan.

Thanks for your help.

What the electrician was probably trying to say is that you need a separate switch leg for each thing you want switched unless you turn them both on and off at the same time. The switch makes a connection from the hot side of the circuit to your device. If you have a separate switched wire running to each device (your light and your fan) then you should be able to switch each independently. You need a nuetral and a ground at each device as well. If your switch box is a single gang then you can get a stacked switch to fit. The important thing is that you have the correct amount of wires at each place to make the circuit.
