|

| In my garage the previous owner had installed a 220 volt outlet for a welder. I don't have a need for this outlet, but I would like a couple 120 volt outlets since there aren't any there now, not sure why though. My question is this, can I tap into the 220 volt receptacle and wire a couple 120 volt outlets off of that? I was thinking of trying to run 1 or 2 outlets off of each leg of the 220V. Will this cause any problems with the existing 2 pole breaker in the house now? I'm not sure how the breaker will trip if for example only 1 leg gets over loaded going thru that breaker. Any suggestions on this one? |

(thanks vince)
Yes you can use the 220 power brought to the garage. I would recommend that you put a subpanel in the garage using the wire that currently goes to the 220 receptacle. The breaker in the house will power the new panel. Do not alter the breaker in the house as it should be sized for the existing wire. You can then use correct sized wire and breakers from the garage panel for the new 120 outlets you are going to install.
