I have an ariston eurocombi boiler and for some reason it has just stopped working. When you turn it on it makes a noise like it is trying to light but the ignition does not happen. Is this a minor problem which may have a quick fix or is it something a little more serious?

You need to give a bit more information than that otherwise the list of possibilities is almost endless.

System pressure level, is fan running, is pump running for instance. Has any electrical work been carried out in the property?

I know that the system pressure is fine and that no electrical work has been carried out recently. As I said, it is making the same noises as it did before but it is not igniting. As for the fan running and the pump running - how do I tell?

If you need detailed instructions to determine if fan and pump are running then I would suggest you engage services of a local CORGI registered heating engineer as without some basic knowledge of the boilers operation you can do more harm than good.

It is also easy to leave the boiler in a dangerous condition.
