I've been told that to balance a rad the shield valve should be adjusted until the temperature of the inlet pipe is a certain temperature above the outlet. What should this difference in temperature be?
I'm thinking of making a dual reading thermometer and having a go at balancing my system.

Why?
Balancing a radiator system is to get all the rads approximately the same temperature, there is no exact science nor does there need to be.
Water is lazy and will always take the easy route, by opening or closing the lockshield valves you can force the heat into a different path.

Thanks for the reply,
I've had a go at closing some of the lockshield valves and my cold rads are now getting hotter. But being an electronics engineer I'm often looking at the technical side of things and get a bit carried away. I don’t trust water it always seems to get out when I don’t want it to. Again thanks for the prompt answer.
