All,

I am currently looking into renovating a property which had a knackered traditional gas boiler.

What would be your suggestions as to upgrading it? Should I replace the existing boiler with a newer, more effective boiler or would you do away with it all and start from scratch with a combi? Any particular combi to be recommended/any to keep away from? What are the plusses/minuses of these? If I put a combi in would it be an idea to replace all the old pipework due to the pressure increases or could this be left? Your advice is much appreciated.

Hi Dave,

All works well then, a picture would be nice.

Depends on how old the system is and the extent of the renovations, is it for let or personal use.

Over 20 years old I would consider replacing the lot and fitting an unvented cylinder with a condensing boiler as your existing would require major alteration to comply with the new regs, and would coming to the end of it's life anway.

Don't forget Gas work and unvented cylinders have to be fitted by an approved class of people and not recomended as DIY.

Whats the mains pressure/ supply like.

It's all pie in the sky at the moment but will be a reality soon enough...I hope!

Basically it'll be shot whatever it is as I'm looking at buying from Auction and am going on the basis that the whole system will need replacing. What exactly (not knowing the difference!) is a condensing boiler? Is this pressurised? i.e. I know 'unvented' means we're not talking header tanks etc (as with gravity) so what's the difference between gravity and what you are suggesting? Is this better than a combi? It's best to assume I know nothing!

Don't worry I wouldn't be fitting it! I have my limits!

Condensing is supa efficient boiler that president Blair has told us we got to fit next year.

Combi's are ideal in a one bed flat with a shower.

The rules also say that you have to comply with Part L of the regs, which includes therostatic valves, room stat etc.

can do a drawing when you know more.
