Why does my hot water get cold so quickly. I have used both the immersion heater and the central heating boiler to heat for several hours but by the morning the water is cold. I do not use much hot water as I live on my own and have an electric powered shower.

Does your hot water cylinder have insulation around it because if it doesnt then it will be losing heat a lot quicker

As the "hot" water leaves the heater to your bath, cold water comes into the heater to replace it and be heated. If you have a small heater (20-30 gallons) the hot water that's left in the tank gets diluted with the cold water, making whats left warm.
If you have an electric heater, perhaps one of the heating coils is damaged. Leaving one coil to spend all night (or all day) getting the water hot. Then as you use the water from the tank, it can't heat the water coming into the tank fast enough to "keep" it hot. Even though it wasn't hot to begin with.
Make sure the temperature is set high enough to start with a full tank of hot (120 degrees) water.

The insulation thought is a bit lame. It's a good idea to insulate, but this problem is more of an issue than just wrapping your tank.

Sorry, the information requested is correct, please remember in the UK we do things differently to you guys, in future please check the OPs location before advising

Can you give us some more information please, a photo of the cylinder would help as well.
