Indirect vented hot water cylinder being fed by a cold water storage cistern in the loft. A problem was noted when the overflow pipe from the cold water cister began running. Initial thoughts were a faulty ball valve but no... The cold feed pipe which should be supplying the hot water storage vessel is back feeding hot water from the storage vessel to the cold water cistern. The cistern is continually filling up and overflowing. The house has no hot water to the taps, but when you turn them on, cold water is drawn off.
Second thoughts were a broken coil in the hot water storage vesse, so the central heating system would be filling up the hot water storage vessel, but why no hot water to the taps? And if the hot water storage vessel is filling up continuously from a cracked coil, why is it not venting through the vent pipe and but being forced back up the cold feed?
Third thoughts, air lock in the hot water draw off at the top of the hot water vessel, blocking the vent pipe, thus forcing any excess hot water out through the only escape route, the cold feed pipe. But would this allow any water at all, cold or hot to be drawn off at the hot taps?

Take a bow for confusing me with your first post 
Ok, you have two tanks in the roof space, a large storage tank and a smaller header tank for the heating.
What are the water levels in relation to each other, which tank is overflowing, and is the ball valve running in either and if so which one.
Has any work been done lately |

| It's the large cold water storage tank thats overflowing due to being back fed from the cold feed to the domestic hot water storage cylinder. The feed and expansion tank for the central heating is stable. On initial inspection it does not appear to be filling or draining. Neither of the ball valves are running. No work has been carried out recently???? |

| Most excellent. They recently had a gravity fed shower installed that has been incorrectly hooked up to the mains. Cheers. |
