When I close the cold water tap in my bathroom and kitchen, I hear a knocking sound in the pipe. I have had to close the rising main stop valve nearly shut to stop this noise, so therefore I am getting little water pressure.

You could fix the pipes for starter, an shock arrester for mains water may help as well
