Hi
Just wondered if i did the right thing? i had a bit of a smell coming out of the bathroom basin i assumed the water was been sucked out of the trap (hence the smell)so i fitted a anti vac to the outlet on the trap but the bottle trap was full of water atleast 75mm, i have left the anti vac in place but wondered would it have the reverse effect ie would water back up into the basin?? or will it be ok and will it help stop the smell
thanks in advance

the antivac trap should be alright. are you saying you stuck your head in the basin and got a whiff there or is the smell in the bathroom as a whole?
you could try putting the plug in and taping over the overflow and seeing if you get the nasty niff then. could be coming from elsewhere |

| One of the most common causes of smells from basins is the over gets blocked, maybe from when it was first installed, anyway you get stagnant water if it can't get out the bottom. |

Thanks for the reply's
i will try taping the overflow and putting in the plug, the smell is a sewer smell but not all the time it seems to happen when i have run the water in the sink, if the smell continues after i have taped up could it be coming out of the toilet even though the toilet has water in it??

have you got a shower tray in the bathroom and does the big pipe from the toilet go thru the roof or does it terminate in the bathroom itself>
the traps on the bath and/or tray might have shallow traps (low water seal) on em and if theres heating pipes nearby/underneath then these could be evaporating quickly over time hence the gammy sewer smell.
the position of the vent pipe going thru the roof also has a bearing on pongy niffs coming back into the house... if the pipe doesnt extend long enough past the lead slate then wind blowing over your ridge can blow down this pipe and if your traps have gone then unpleasant wiffs are in your face,friend.... |

Hi Straker
i dont have a shower tray just a normal bath and if i remember correctly the bath has a normal bottle trap on it and the heating pipes are on the opposite wall so hopefully rules that one out.
i actually have a bungalow so no soil stack not even a stub my loo pipe goes straight out of the wall into the ground and into the sewer there is a cover in the garage but there isnt any blocks there and it smells relatively ok for a sewer

Hi
I'm 95% sure the smell is coming from the bath waste not the sink as i thought, just wanted to know your opinion on bottle traps are they any good or is there another type of waste i could use.
the reason i ask is i have looked at the trap and i was wondering how it forms a seal of water in the pipe when the outlet is at the top and the bottle is obviously at the bottom or am i been thick
any advice appreciated
regards

| Buy an HepVo dry trap and fit it in line, you will need an MI x plastic straight connector to go with it |
