I'm not sure if you have sump pumps in the UK. but. it sounds like you might have a shifted sewer line.A couple quick questions. Does the sewer leadiing out of the house go through the wall? Should be a 4'' cast iron pipe with a brass cap. Why would this cause a smell. Well, when it rains the drain tile to the house collects the water and directs it to the sump pump. This is where the smell would be from. If the sewer is indeed shifted. every time you run water a small amount will leak out from the shift outside the wall. which will cause it to leak into the drain tile. The sump pump might be located close to both rooms you mentioned.
