turned on laptop but dead checked in BIOS no hard drive reconised
so connected into desk top and no hard drive
ordered new hard drive for laptop so awaiting that
any way i can recover data on hard drive because cant connect to desktop as slave

Any help

Good news is yes you can. Bad news is if the drive is defective it is expensive.

There are several companies that recover information from broken hard drives but you are looking at several hundred pounds!

Chances are its not the hard drive thats gone.

When mine went toes up with over a 100Gb of files and folders, The man in PC World pointed me too a remote hard drive case (Intergal) about 30quid, cant be that easy I say, having worried about it all week.

Back indoors I plug the hard drive into the box, and plug the usb into the computer and its all there, I'm now using the set-up as an remote hard drive for the lap tops, The really good bit is it works on all three lap tops including the Mac Book, and the computers, I just plug it into to whatever machine I'm using, which is brilliant when away from home.

Nick will be along later and he knows more than must so keep looking in.

Thinking out loud
do you mean external hard drive
and could you put a windows vista programme onto the remote and use that as your main windows vista on many computers

No "integral" it's the brand name, if the guys are as helpful as the Bath branch ask them what they recommend, best to either take the hard drive or the details.

Yes I now use it as an remote hard drive, and can open and close files the same as the computer, the only difference it is completely portable and works or seems to work on any system.

Sorry for lateness of input.. been in snowwy Seattle all week!

What is the status of your HD? Did you get an external case for it? Did it work?

Does the drive *try* to spin-up when powered up? (can you hear *any* noises at all from it?)
or
Does it actually spin up but still not recognised by PC?
or
Do you hear nothing from it at all, no whine, no clicks, no buzz, no vibration?

If the drive is attempting to spin up but not succeeding and you have discounted the professional recovery company as an option owing to cost then I would suggest you give the 'freezer' method a go.
