After taking wallpaper off I discover this old vent (from long removed coalfire) This is an upstairs bedroom and where the coalfire was (downstairs) there is now a gas fire.

I want to seal this vent and then skim over. Can I just use some ply and then skim it. Its approx 1 foot square.

thanks

The vent isn't in the same room as the fire then. Question

I would brick it up if it's a brick wall, and skim it with multiplaster, if its a stud wall trim it back to the nearest upright

Different rooms. The vent is upstair and the fire downstair, I think from the days of coal fires whereby convection was used to heat some of the upstair rooms.
