I am having intermittent trouble w/my toilet not flushing - I have had a plumber out who snaked it and said it is not the outflow (meaning that the drain is not plugged), but that the tank or under rim holes are not releasing suction to allow the bowl to flush. It was fine during the summer months when it was hot. Now it is cooler and has started up again. The plumber I had in last spring put some liquid in the tank to clear the holes. That did help. I do have soft water. There is a lot of rust inside my tank. This past year is the first time I had trouble w/this toilet. It is on the first floor and drains to a septic system. Help - I am running out of towels and probably flooring. Thanks for any ideas.

Try cleaning the holes with a wire or metal clothes hanger. I also use the wire hanger to clean the bugger hole opposite the drain inside the toilet. I was having the same proble, and I changed the mechanism in the tank, which may have not helped. But then I sqw on TV some guy cleaning the holes with the wure hanger and saying that the cause of not flushing was blocked holes and to clean them with the hanger. Of course, use rubber gloves.

Depending how old the toilet is, you may just need to get a new one. If the toilet is really that dirty, you won't be able to clean it well enough. I had the same problem and the plumber I called out said to save money I should replace it. I got a newer toilet that uses less water per flush, another bonus. You will also get a chance to see if their is any damage to the subfloor when you take the toilet out.
