We are having our 4 bedroom house rewired which according to the electrician, over the past weeks, has been fairly easy to do as all cables have pulled through well. However, we are so frustrated at the situation that has evolved, I would be grateful for some advice or an opinion.
Job entailed total rewire of loft, 4 bedrooms, bathroom, separate wc, hall, landing, lounge, dining room, kitchen, utility, sun lounge, passage, cloakroom, outside lights x 4 and garage. Also generator and fittings, movement of electricity meter from inside to outside and underfloor heating in kitchen.
How long should this all take? We are now in the 12th week and still have quite a way to go. We have had every excuse made for his non appearance, when he does come it is only 1 or 2 days a week and then he does only 5 hours work if we are lucky. He has arranged for the meter to be moved but 2 calls to EDF energy have revealed no pre-booking of this job although they have been apparently coming about 10 times but never appear. EDF say they have to do it but electrician says he doesn't know who will do it. Meanwhile the meter has been suspended from the ceiling but the cables have snapped and it has fallen on to the new kitchen cupboard. He has promised completion in week 4, week 8, 9, 10, and definately by week 11. We have moved furniture around, put it back, moved it again etc because he has promised he would come time and time again but to no avail. We were recommended him through another electrician who could not fit us in at the time but now we can find no record of him being registered on the governing body websites. In his favour when he does come he seems quite competant. We have now spoken to our solicitor and outlined a final date for completion but he is now claiming the job has been very awkward and the situation is becoming messy. He has created the mess we have been most friendly and welcoming and understanding but we are now desparate as we are left with holes in walls and ceilings - should he make good.
Thank you greatly in anticipation would really like to know if 12 weeks is excessive and whether this situation is normal!

Very hard to say without seeing the job, but 7-10 should have been plenty.
Normally I make good to just below finished plaster level and it is down to the customer to get a decorator or plaster to finish the walls/cielings.

The problem has progressed as the new deadline that was given for completion has now passed with some work still remaining including issuing of installation certificate. If I can't get a certificate from would i need to get a Building Regs inspector in to approve it for Part P purposes and what the cost would be?

Your electrician is required by law to issue a cert on completion of the works.
Is he regeistered under Part 'P'?
Building control can prosecute him if he is not.
