Thats it really. How long does a thatched roof last?
I am looking for a small bungalow for my Mum and found a beautiful thatched one. It says it was recently re-thatched in 2000, but 'my wife' reliably tells me that you have to have houses re-thatched every 10 years! Rolling Eyes Is this right?
Now, I know you are going to ask me about type of thatch etc etc, but I don't know any more details as yet. I do know the building isn't listed though!
Hope you can help......

So what about all those houses over 100years old?? Rethatched every 10 years - No way. Will need a bit of regular checking but then what roof doesn't?

It might however be a good idea before buying to contact a local thatching company and get them to give the roof the once over to check for any potential problems.

They would also, having seen the roof be in a good position to advise on its expected life span.

We used to thatch the ricks back in the 50s Cool

A good thatched roof will last 30-50 years provided you look after it.

A few links which you should find helpful.

Thanks chaps,
Obviously if we were to consider buying this place we would get the roof professionally checked, but we just didn't want to dismiss the property out of hand just because it is thatched.
30 - 50 years sounds much more realistic to me, so I think I will now go and arrange a viewing.
Thanks again
Andy

Get the name of the thatcher when you visit and phone him for his opinion of the roof condition.

It may have just had a top coat fitted
