Hi,
I have grown loads of potatoes in my veg patch this year, as I did't have time to do an assortment of veg. I am now digging them up as required and they are very tasty. However, I am noticing when cleaning them that they are covered in a black crusty bits. Hard to describe, but almost like little black barnacles!!!! Thay scrape off when washing the potatoes, but I was wondering what it was and if I can stop it, as it is a bit of a pain to keep scraping off.
Any ideas? Excuse my ignorance, but I am not a veg gardener really! |

Could be something to do with all the chalk in them pesky downs
Potato scab is generally a problem with soil containing lots of lime.
Next time out surround the planting sets with Leaf mould and or peat, it should make a lot of diffference. |

Bleedin' 'eck Scruff, do you know everything!!!!
Potatoe scab??!! Is it a living thing? Going to look it up now!!
I didn't think my soil was too alkaline, but will take on board your recommendation and give the patch a good dose of leaf mould next spring.
Thanks, yet again, |
