|
|
Hi ,
My gas meter is located on the side of my bungalow i(cavity wall)n a standard surface mounted box, sticks out from the wall about 10 or 12 inches .
I want to extend my driveway down the side of the house and for safety to avoid hitting the box with the car would like to replace it with a type that is recessed into the wall, like my adjacent electric meter box which only sticks out about 2".
Who do i get to do this work gas board, builder or plumber? Obviously the gas meter will need to be removed. Or is it best to cut the new box in above the existing gas meter box then get the meter moved. The existing box is now 32" from floor.

Somewhere along the line you will need the gas supplier to move the meter.
Get in touch with Wales and West utilities (WAWU) for advice and cost. |

Thanks Scruff, Do you think they will install the new box or is it a builder job? Trying to avoid having no hot water for days on end (combi boiler)

You will probably have to use, WAWU to disconnect the meter, a builder to fit the box, WAWU to refit the meter, and an RGI to re-connect the services to the property.
You may even need a move a meter man separately from WAWU
My first move would be as I said contact the utilities. They should also be able to supply the box. |

Sorry to butt in scruff, just thought i'd mention that a gas box can be purchased from most builders merchants.
Fixing instructions are supplied.
If you are a capable d-i-y'er its fairly easy to fit, the external brickwork needs to be chopped away to the given measurements and the box just screws to the internal brickwork or blockwork, no lintel is required. |

No Problem blute, if the job was a starting from scratch.
In this case we have a meter which needs disconnecting, we have an existing gas pipe into the building, and a service pipe suppling the meter, all needs WAWU and an Rgi to remove and re-pipe later.
Thats not to mention filling the cavity with brick rubble, and sealing the box to prevent any escape of gas into the cavity.
A simple job but could need the services of 4 different trades.
Psssssssst just noticed the screwy bit
Apart from the minor details that the box shouldn't touch the internal wall as you would compromise the cavity, it is also against regs to make any holes in the sealed chamber of the box which sits in the wall.
The only hole will have a sleeve which is sealed onto the back of the box and goes through the wall, the gas pipe is then sealed with flexible fire mastic in the box end only. |

I don't have a problem actually installing a box, quite competent I had done it on my previous house.

I wouldn't want to fill the cavity with rubble and compromise the cavity, this proposed new box would be in a timber frame construction bungalow (outer wall 4"block)! Anyway the boxes are sealed with a vented door the only blanked off hole is the special spigot as you mentioned or the service ipipe nlet which is on the external flange.
Begining to think it is easier to build a brick/block dwarf wall to protect the existing surface mounted box from possible car damage.
