I've just bought a house which has an ensuite with an old, barrel-shaped MIRA shower fitted. The previous occupants didn't use it and when I turned it on it started to leak, and couldn't be shut off. Apparently this is not uncommon, and what I want to do is to close off the water flow to the shower by putting valves into the feed pipes in the attic.
There appear to be two such pipes - one is obviously from the cold water tank - the second connects to a pipe that leads at one end to the hot water tank, and the other to what appears to be an overflow pipe into the cold water tank.
I would just like to be sure that by putting a valve into both of these pipes I will not be affecting anything else - the only possible thing that I can think off is the hot water pipe that feeds the bath.
Grateful for advice. |

If by overflow pipe you are refering to the pipe that goes from the top of the hot water cylinder and rises above the cold water and is then bent over you are refering to the expansion pipe. DO NOT put any valves in this pipe as it could lead to a dangerous situation arising.
However 'T'ed off of this pipe will at some point be the feed to the hot taps and shower (probably two seperate 'T' junctions). You can fit a gate, or preferably a quarter turn ball, valve in this pipe. Gate valves tend not to fully close off the water and also tend to become siezed up.
