Wondering what would be the proper height of a chair rail / wainscot in our down stairs family room. We want to paint the top portion a light color and the bottom portion a darker color but we are unsure how far up from the floor we should go with the bottom color where the molding will cover the seam. Is there a proper height or just what ever a person desires ?

Whatever looks best for the room. Height of ceiling etc. 42"-48" would be average

We have 9' walls and wonder if we go 58" up from the floor if it would look right. This would match a ledge that comes off of the fire place mantel. Although this would put it more than half way up the wall.

We had trouble finding informaiton on chair rail or wainscot. Does it de-value your home if you have this kind of design?

It is it a more old fashioned technique? Do you know where we might get pictures for ideas?
