That depends on many things and an answer would be un-reliable of the cuff.
It would depend on the length and size of the existing joist, plus the intended use and the weight load, a structural engineer would be able to advise.
In addition Your local building department would need to be informed and regs complied with.
A loft ladder and a light would not be exceptable if you use it as an office, whereas for storage only it may be. |
