The shrub roses in my front garden seem to have gone crazy this year. They are nearly six feet high. They really need pruning. How much can I take off without damaging them?
Thanks

| I shall be taking mine down to within 12" (300mm ) of the ground this year. |

Thanks,
That's what I was hoping you would say. Previously I have had some 'die-back' and I was worried it might have been my pruning that caused it.

Shrub rose generally require little pruning, and just a thinning out in March is all they need, then about every 3rd or 4th year a bit more drastic.
I tend to be very drastic every 3-4 years and cut them right down, although they tend to loose some flowers early on they seem to make up for it later in the year with a second blooming.
This year I'm going to try growing from seed (rose heps) we shall see |
