I'm looking at starting a hedge and was wondering which trees I should use for this purpose. The garden backs on to playing fields so I'd like it relatively inaccessable. Could you also tell me how far apart I should plant them.

A good question, depend on what your after, where its going, type of soil etc.

My all time favourite is “Fagus (Beech). The common beech, Fagus sylvatica, is widely used as a formal hedge, when planted as a hedge the leaves persist throughout the autumn and winter, in a magnificent golden brown colour.

A hedge can be grown to any reasonable height and the planting distance is 12”-18” apart, for a thick hedge plant a double staggered row about 8”-10” apart, with 12”-18” between the plants in the rows.

Do not clip for the first two years after planting, and thereafter trim in the summer or autumn.

More if you give me some info.
