I understand that a 240 volt electric motor will consume less electrical current that a 120 volt electric motor. Is that correct? If 'yes' how much will a 240 volt motor save over a 120 volt motor??? Does a 240 volt motor require a larger diameter wire than a 120 volt motor?
I am trying to determine if it is worth the cost to rewire a pool motor that is dual current type.
thanks,

The answer to your question depends on the terminology you are thinking in!!
A 220Volt motor will use half the current that a 110Volt motor so enabling thinner cables to be used but both will use the same, for all intents, amount of POWER.
They will consume the same amount of electric just that one uses double the current whilst the other double the voltage.
Power consumed= Volts x Amps and 110Volts x 20Amps x hours = 220Volts x 10Amps x hours. |

Thanks Alan
But, is the cost of running both voltage motors the same? Or, is it less costly to run the 240 motor?
Thanks,

Presumably you are charged for your electricity on the basis of the POWER used. In which case the POWER consumption will be effectivly, might be a small difference, the same.
Volts x Amps = Power
110 x 20 = 2.2Kw
220 x 10 = 2.2Kw.
This side of the pond we are charged at per Kw/hour with the above we would be charged for 2,2Kw/hour if we ran it for an hour. Two hours would be 4.4Kw/hours but both examples would attract the same cost. |
