When a driver is involved in 'other work' should this be taken off his permitted drivers hours?
eg drive for four hours then work for eight hours then drive for four hours.
is this legal?

As far as I know, yes it's legal, as the HGV driving rules only apply to the length you're driving without a break.

Saying that no-one in their right mind can work 16 hours a day safely, and if you have an accident they will throw the book at you.

Perhaps you can remember the guy that de-railed the train a while back when he fell asleep at the wheel and parked across the main line when he ran off the road.

He was up half the night on the computer etc, and got done for manslaughter.
