A quesion from a novice!!!!
Can I use a Sodium lamp with an ES fitting (internal ignitor) in a standard ES lampholder (fitted in an external lamp stand), or do I need a different fitting ?

NO.
You will need the gear tray with the ballast and ignitor on it to make the lamp work.
