The lights in our kitchen ceiling go on and off every several minutes with no discernable pattern. Could this be loose wires or is there some other possibility?

Apologies for chipping in Jim, but I was about to post this exact same problem, so thought we might both find the answer!

We have downlighters in our kitchen, bathroom, hall and living room. When we first moved into our flat earlier last year we thought it was just that the bulbs had gone, but having replaced the bulbs the problem's the same.

Some of them just won't come on at all. Some light up if you let them hang down from their fittings/brackets, some come on if you prod them with a stick, and more recently, some come on and off of their own accord.

The lounge and kitchen ones are on a dimmer switch, the others on a normal switch.

Is it likely to be loose connections to each individual bulb, or does the whole flat need rewiring?!

Happy to start a new post if that's easier, but hope you can help either way.

This one sounds like loose connections to me.

This one sounds like the transformer is either under insulation or to close to the lamp and is switching on and of with the termal overheat in the transformer.
