|
|
Hi,
I have an HP laptop which runs off the mains using the supplied power adaptor. The power adaptor is in 2 parts - the mains cable which plugs into the wall socket and ends in a cloverleaf connector (see http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=29240&doy=2m1 as an example) and the adaptor itself.
What I want to do is put an in-line switch on the mains cable between the mains plug and the cloverleaf connector so I can turn the adaptor off without having to either unplug it or turn off the mains socket. (The adaptor is actually plugged into a 4 way extension lead which is hidden under the desk in a very unaccessible place!)
Is this a stupid idea?
I am happy that I can do the wiring (after all, its only cutting the mains cable in half and wiring an in-line switch).
The adaptor converts mains voltage to 20v, 6A, 120W.
If it is not stupid, could someone suggest the in-line switch I should get?
Thanks |

Can't see that it would be a problem but wait for a sparky to confirm.
Interesting to note the cloverleaf connection, Any laptop I have ever seen including the 3 at home only has 2 wires. |

Toshiba use to use the same ones.
There is no problem with what you want to do.
Maplins will have an inline switch suitable min load 5-10amp switching current at 230v.
