Bathing a dog too much will cause skin irritations, which itself would cause the dog to smell. It may be an indication of health problems in your dog. It could be the dogs diet. It would, also be worth checking his bed. Brushing your dog regularly should help, also check in his ears. Regular treatment for worms helped my dog when I first got him, so it might be worth checking that out to. Oh, and watch what he rolls in when he's outside, it's often not pleasant!
I only suggest these things because I myself have a dog and I am not any way a qualified vet, so if any doubt, get your dog checked out by a vet.
