Is it possible to tile onto existing tiles, wall and floor, or is it much better to remove the old ones first, given the damage this may cause?

I'm planning to do this aswell and have been told that you can do it, but need to make sure that you score the old tiles first in order for the adhesive to have something to bond onto. Apparently any adhesive will do. On the plus side, at least it means that you will be tiling onto a flat surface. If you take the old tiles off first, you might end up having to replaster the entire room.
