Hello! I'm fresh meat on this board and I have a very stupid question:

In a plug there is always a fuse. Why is there sometimes a 13amp and other times only a 3 or 5amp fuse? Is it bad to replace a fuse with one that has a different amp value?

....Just curious! And tired of having to go out and buy so many different fuses all the time for computers, lamps, stereo.... hope you guys can help.

The fuse rating is to protect the appliance, the recommended fuse will be in the manufactors information and shouldn't be increased.

Thanks! I went out and bought a packet of five 3amp fuses.. only to realize they were too small... aaaaargh!

As a plumber & heating engineer we have to know a lot about everthing including basic electrics.

This site experienced a lot of technical problems and is still growing, in the absence of the more qualified guys who visit occasionally I answer the simple questions.

Too small a fuse is better than too big, just got more chance of blowing, why not try the one you have.

I bought ones that were too small.... physically that is. I didn't notice it said 'miniature' on the packet.... stupid me!
