Hi there

A friend and I are having a friendly dispute about a hypothetical question. He says that it is a criminal offence in the UK not to assist someone in need (for example if you saw someone in the street havinga heart attack). He says you can be held accountable in Portugal (where he comes from) and that he assumes other countries are the same. I have lived in several countries where the onus to assist a stranger would be the moral thing to do but is not enshrined in law. I would imagine it would be very difficult to enact or enforce such a law. Can you please clarify what is the legal position in the UK.

Many thanks
