I am currently trying to replace a switch in my bathroom. Originally the switched controlled two different fixtures. The overhead fan, and the vanity light. Both having there own switch. (to give you a visual one switch is above the other) We had to replace the switch after the top switch (which controlled the lights) stopped working. Now we can only get the light switch to work with the fan on one switch. What are we doing wrong.

We connected the next light switch just as the old one was. Mind you the wiring is aluminum, and the light switch that we are using is for copper only. But the gentleman at the home center assured us that this was okay.
We also replaced the outlet with a GFI because the top outlet had stopped working. Now that is has been replaced it is working fine.

If someone. Anyone knows what we should do to eliviate this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

One should ALWAYS replace like for like unless they are competent, Unless you can remember exactly where the connection go I think your going to need an electrician to trace the circuits.

Another good idea is to write down the colours and the number of each wire too terminal, before you disconnect them.
