I am looking to wire a dimmer switch in my bathroom instead of the standard switch. The problem I ran into was the wires that are currently connected are older. There is only a black wire and a purple wire connected to the current switch. There was a yellow wire in the back of the box that has a wire nut on it, but is not connected to the current switch. Will it be safe to wire a new dimmer switch? Which wire goes to what? Any help is appreciated.

hook up the dimmer switch to the same wires the same way the old switch is connected. make sure to turn off the power to the circuit before doing anything. Check the old wires to insure they are safe and do not have cracked insulation or the like. putting in the dimmer should not be any more or less safe than the switch you are currently using. as with any installation, if you are not sure hire a professional to install.
