I'm looking for a medium sized family car that'll be relatively cheap to insure, no older than 2000(x) for less than £5000. Ideally it will be Japanese as I find them unquestionably reliable. I'm thinking about either the Nissan Primera or the Honda Civic. Any other suggestions or recommendations on these?

I recently bought a 1999 2-litre accord for £5000 (august 03) before buying I asked a friend who is a mechanic and is obsessed with engine quality and build. His advice was buy japanese or german.

Sorry ianba didn`t finish reply. He said the Primera has a very strong engine, service costs are low but quality of paint finish is suspect, good alround quality for the civic but avoid the 1.4 engine as it is not as economical as the larger engines. The accord he rated as excellent engine and bodywork extremely reliable (came out top in recent independent reliability survey) but servicing costs are slightly greater than average
