As an engineering student, I've been asked to look at doing a project on why electrical sockets aren't wired like phone sockets (IDC method) which just push cables into the back of the socket and don't have bits of cable dangling around.
Is there a good reason for this?
Any help very gratefully received! |

Perhaps the best reason is current capacity.
Telephones work at 50volt dc and 100volt ac but at a very few milliamps.
A double 13Amp socket outlet at full capacity would need these connections to carry 26 Amps. Quite a sizeable and strong connection would be needed.
I like the idea though.
