| I am building an extention onto the back of my house which is going to be used as a kitchen. Can you tell me what are the spot light distances away from the walls and also the centres of spot lights in a kitchen. The kitchen is 5200mm x 4800mm. I am using low voltage halogens of 50W with a flood spread pattern. The ceiling height is 2400mm. Thanks |

???? Not sure what you mean.
The fittings need to be far enough away from wall to prevent wall cupboards not creating a shadow but not too far that anybody standing at worktop causes shadow to be cast on worktop.

Measurements are a finite figure which you asked for. However what would be the purpose of fitting them in a certain position and then finding the lighting effect was poor. The idea of good lighting in a work enviroment (and a kitchen is a work enviroment) is the avoidance of shadows.
Shadows MUST therefore be taken into account.
If I suggested to you that you placed them 600mm from the walls you would perhaps be happy. BUT you give no indication of what wall units, if any, you might have fitted nor how many actual fittings you intended using to give your desired effect. Nor if you are intending to use any other form of lighting under any cupboards.
These could mean some adjustment to the distance from the wall. However go too far back and you would cast a shadow on the work area.
Distance apart would depend upon the manufacturers own definition of 'flood' which varies between manufacturers.
In the days when I carried out more electrical work in relation to kitchen refits I tended to temporarily mount the light fittings on the surface of the ceiling.
This made it easier to adjust their position for firstly the best lighting and also for the best overall effect I was trying to achieve. This method also enables you to take into account ALL the features of a room.
The distance between fittings is often dictated by the manufacturers of the fittings as they often come with a preassembled wiring harness.

Alan all i was looking for was a an approximate guildline. the distance out from the wall being 600mm is exactly what i am looking for. As far as i am aware as a consumer there is only two types of lv lights which are used in a kitchen, spots and floods. i have done my homework and can't find any reference on the centres of each light, apart from one account. considering the details i have given it suggests i use one light per 1.5 metres square of floor area. being i only have only one reference to that i wanted to make sure and have a second opinion and that's why i am asking this site.

You place them where you like for the best effect.

I'm upset now scruff! You took two lines to say what I took two pages to say!
Spose at least I did explain why!! And it kept me away from my tax form for a bit so it's not all bad.
